Malan's Basin Trail
Trail Description: Scenic trail that traverses up the South side of Taylor Canyon. Trail can be accessed at 29th Street trailhead or 27th Street trailhead. 5 Switchbacks gain 2,200 feet of elevation.
Distance: Approximately 5 miles round-trip beginning at either 27th or 29th street trailhead.
Difficulty: Moderate. 1st and 2nd Switchback are the longest and most difficult of the 5 switchbacks.
Directions to trailhead:
27th Street Trailhead- Turn East on 27th Street from Harrison Boulevard. Drive to the end of the street and park vehicle on the street (no parking lot).
29th Street Trailhead- Turn East on 29th Street from Harrison Boulevard. Drive to the end of the street, and turn right into a large parking lot.
Directions to Malan’s Basin Trail:
- Follow signs toward ‘Taylor Canyon Trail.’
- Continue along Taylor Canyon Trail until bridge that crosses over the creek (may or may not be running depending on season.) At the bridge, there will be a sign pointing across the bridge labeled ‘Malan’s Basin Trail.’ Cross the bridge and continue along the trail. After crossing the bridge, you will begin to ascend the 1st of 5 switchbacks that lead you to Malan’s Peak. After reaching Malan’s Peak, you can continue East on the trail 1/2 mile to reach Malan’s Basin.
Highlights: 1st Overlook- scenic look at Ogden area and surrounding Mountains, Great Salt Lake
Malan’s Peak- stunning vistas of Northern Wasatch Front, Oquirrh and Stansbury Mountains, Great Salt Lake, Mount Ogden and Ben Lomond Peak
Malan’s Basin- former resort location during early 1900’s. Small creek that runs down to Waterfall Canyon.
